Clan Maclean Heritage Trust

Introduction

The Clan Maclean Heritage Trust was established by the Clan Maclean Association in 1996 to recognise and cherish the heritage of the Clan Maclean around the world, as well as in Scotland, and to educate the wider public about it.

The Association had already started this work by placing the armorial stone above the main entrance to Duart Castle in 1986, by restoring the ancient Maclean burial aisle at Lochaline in 1992, by erecting a cairn in 1996 at Drimnin pier to commemorate Charles Maclean of Drimnin who was killed leading the Macleans at Culloden in the '45, and by commissioning a portrait of the hero, author and traveller, Sir Fitzroy Maclean (1911-1996).

Since then, the Trust has commemorated Macleans in Australia, Canada, Scotland,England, New Zealand and the USA by erecting cairns and memorial plaques; it has paid for the restoration of important buildings and historical documents associated with the Clan; and it has funded a Piping Bursary for young Macleans at the National Piping Centre. The Clan Maclean Association has also transferred to the Trust ownership of the Maclean Library, which is housed at the Isle of Mull Museum at Tobermory.

In this section of the website you can view the major achievements of the Trust, the events organised by the Trust in recent years and some of the important current projects that are in progress. Visitors to Mull can also see a panel showing most of the heritage projects in which the Association and the Trust have been involved, displayed in the History Room at the top of the Keep at Duart Castle.

Trustees are drawn from the Clan Maclean world-wide. The Chief is ex officio a Trustee.

The Trust has benefited enormously from the generosity of clan members. It has received the gift of the Gaelic bible of Hector McLean, ancestor of Professor Ephraim MacLean, Atlanta; and the gift of various heirlooms of the Kaid Sir Harry Maclean (1848-1920), including his ceremonial sword, pistol and Matriculation of Arms. These are now housed for the Trust at the Isle of Mull Museum. Such gifts are most welcome and the Trust is very grateful to all the donors involved.
